Caption: Oil wells and natural gas storage tank. Natural gas storage tank (right) and oil wells (left) near a compressor station. Natural gas is a fossil fuel obtained from underground oil and gas deposits by drilling and pumping. The natural gas is stored until ready for distribution, and the excess natural gas is burnt off in flares, as seen here. Compression machinery (not seen), is used to pump the gas under pressure through pipes to industry and homes. This oilfield and storage tank are served by the DNS-7 booster pumping station of the Komi fuel-and-energy complex, in the Usinsky oilfield, in the Republic of Komi in Russia. It is operated jointly by Lukoil and the Komi company. Photographed in 2006.
