Caption: Gas pipeline explosion. Workers clearing debris and preparing to repair a natural gas pipeline following an explosion. Natural gas, a fossil fuel, is flammable and if it leaks out of its pipes it may ignite and cause an explosion. This blast took place on the Urengoi-Pomary-Uzhgorod mainline pipe in the Ukraine, near the village of Luka, in the Tarashchani district near Kiev. 30 metres of pipeline, 1.4 metres in diameter, was destroyed. This line is operated by the Russian energy company Gazprom, carrying natural gas from northern Russia to Central and Western Europe. Photographed on 8 May 2007.
