Caption: Sycamore seeds. Each of this pair of seeds of the sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus) has a wing. The wing causes the seed to rotate as it falls from its parent tree, keeping it airborne in the manner of a helicopter. This allows the wind to carry it far from its parent tree, aiding the spread of the tree and also preventing the young tree from having to compete for light and nutrients with its parent. The sycamore is native to Europe, although it has been introduced into temperate areas worldwide. It is commonly planted in cities as it is resistant to pollution and other environmental stresses.
