Caption: Gas flare from a venting pipe at a petrochemical plant or oil refinery. The flare is burning small amounts of natural gas that are within crude oil. This method is used when the volume of gas is not sufficient to justify extraction for commercial use. In a petrochemical plant, crude oil is heated and passed through catalytic cracking towers to separate its component parts (fractions), which range from heavy oils to gases.
