Caption: Caspian Sea oil rig. Oil rigs are large floating platforms used to drill for and pump oil from below the seabed. Oil is the fossil fuel that powers much of the world's cars and industries, and which is also used to produce materials like plastics. The Caspian Sea is an oil-rich inland sea in western Asia. This oil rig is the Shelf-1 drilling well, in the Azerbaijan part of the Caspian Sea. Photographed on 1 June 1983, when Azerbaijan was part of the USSR.
