Caption: Oil drill operators handling drilling machinery. Oil drills are used to drill deep into the ground to reach underground reservoirs of oil. The bore shaft and drilling bit need to be constantly lubricated with drilling fluid to withstand the high temperatures and pressures generated, and to bring the drilled rock to the surface. At regular intervals, extra sections are added to the drill pipe as the drill digs deeper. Each section is usually around 10 metres long. The bore hole itself is less than a metre across, but modern oil wells can be drilled to over 12 kilometres deep. This oil well is in Noyabrsk, in the oil fields of Western Siberia, Russia. Photographed in 2004.
