Caption: Hydroelectric power station. View of the Cwm Dyli hydroelectric power (HEP) station in a mountainous area of Wales. The pipe running up the hill behind the power station (centre) is the feed pipe. This brings water to the station from a reservoir over the hill (out of image at top). The energy from the water flowing downhill is used to drive turbines inside the HEP station. HEP stations are frequently used during periods of high electricity demand. This is because they can easily control how much electricity they produce, by opening or closing floodgates in the feed pipe.
