Caption: Hydroelectric power. View of a dam used for hydroelectric power (HEP) generation. Water at the bottom of the reservoir behind the dam (at left) is under tremendous pressure. When electricity is needed, the water is allowed to flow through turbines at the foot of the dam. HEP is often generated during periods of high electricity demand because of its ease of control. The arch shape of the dam dissipates the water pressure against the sides of the valley. This is the Tignes les Boisses at Barrage de Tignes in France. It was built in 1953 and produces an average of 154 million kilowatt-hours per year.
