Caption: Three Gorges Dam, China, satellite image. The dam (centre-lower right), two-thirds built here on 21 April 2002, is being built to harness the power of the Yangtze River. A channel (down centre) lets ships access a ship lift (centre) to pass between the dam and the left river bank. The main river is still open (top right and bottom), flowing from bottom to top round the dam. When completed, ships will use the large 5-stage lock (down far left). Power stations (one at centre right) will provide hydroelectric power. The entire project, among the largest in the world, is scheduled for completion in 2009.
