Caption: Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of seeds of the foxglove plant, Digitalis purpurea, the leaves of which are used to produce the drug digitalin for slowing the pulse rate in treatment of heart disease. One explanation of the highly decorative nature of the foxglove seed's exterior is that the pits, scales, ridges & other forms of ornamentation increase the chances of germination: dust particles are trapped in the spaces, so that when the seed falls on moist ground the additional weight anchors it sufficiently to allow germination to proceed. Magnification: X9 for 35mm size, X18 for 6x7cm size.
