Caption: Aerial view of the 'Solar One' thermoelectric solar power station. Some 1800 mirrors reflect sunlight to the top of the central tower, where the combined energy is sufficient to boil pressurised water. The steam thus produced is used to turn turbines at the base of the tower, generating up to 10MW (million Watts) of electricity. This is equivalent to the electricity demand of a town of 20,000 people. Each mirror is controlled by a computer to track the sun during the day, turning at night in anticipation of sunrise. This solar power station is near Barstow, California, where the weather allows operation for more than 300 days each year.
