Caption: Solar powered level crossing at Idridgehay station, Derbyshire, UK. This railway line, which is no longer in use, runs from Duffield to Wirksworth in Derbyshire. The experimental solar panels (right) were installed in the 1980s by British Rail when the line was still in use. The system consists of photovoltaic (pv) cells and batteries that converts light from the sun into electricity to power the crossing. Photographed in 2007.
