Caption: Chunks of silicon. This silicon will be used in the manufacture of photovoltaic cells for use in solar panels. These unrefined chunks of silicon can be handled in a variety of ways to produce processed varieties such as polycrystalline silicon, monocrystalline silicon, or ribbon silicon. Silicon is used in photovoltaic cells because, as a semiconductor material, it has space in its electronic structure to absorb the energy of incoming sunlight and convert it into an electrical current.
