Caption: Photovoltaic cells. Automated machinery printing electrical circuitry (metal strips, yellow) onto photovoltaic cells, for use in solar panels. The photovoltaic cells have been constructed from polycrystalline silicon. Silicon is used in photovoltaic cells because, as a semiconductor material, it has space in its electronic structure to absorb the energy of incoming sunlight and convert it into an electrical current. The electricity generated by each cell is conducted away by the metal strips and stored or used to run electrical equipment. Photographed at the Photowatt factory in Caen, France.
