Caption: Party at Los Alamos. Photograph taken during a party at the 'Big House', the residence of Robert Oppenheimer during the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, 1943-45. Oppenheimer, director of the laboratory, is seen at right. The man in the pale suit at left is Eric Jette, head of the plutonium metallurgy group in the Project. The Manhattan Project was created to design and build the first nuclear bombs. 'Big House' was one of the existing buildings at the Los Alamos site, reserved for the highest-ranking members of the project. Other accommodation was hastily assembled for other scientists and workers.
