Caption: Hiroshima. View of the devastation of Hiroshima, Japan, following the 6 August 1945 dropping of the atomic bomb on the city by the US Air Force. The picture was taken from the Chamber of Commerce building. The tracks in the picture run towards the Hukuya Department Stores. On the extreme right can be seen the ruins of the Geibi Bank Building and Shima Hospital. The first nuclear bomb used in anger, the 'Little Boy' uranium bomb exploded 580 metres above Hiroshima with a force of 12,500 tons of TNT. It killed 140,000 people by the end of 1945, and a further 60,000 from wounds or radiation sickness by 1950.
