Caption: Operation Cue atom bomb test. Observers watching the atomic explosion carried out at 05:10 local time on 5th May 1955, at the Nevada Test Site, USA. The explosion, equivalent to 30,000 tons of TNT, destroyed an area several kilometres across. The mushroom cloud has risen many kilometres into the atmosphere. Operation Cue, supervised by the Federal Civil Defense Administration, included experiments to test the effect of an atom bomb on civilian areas. The atomic explosion itself, named Apple-2, was the 13th test in the Operation Teapot series.
