Caption: The fruit of the wild cocoa tree, Theobroma bicolor. One of the fruits has been opened to expose the seeds. This species grows in the rainforest of Amazonian Ecuador, and it is often transplanted into the gardens of the indians who live there. The local name for it is patas, and its seeds are roasted and eaten. Cultivated cocoa is derived from a member of the same family, Theobroma cacao.
