Caption: Pineapple plantation. The pineapple is the fruit of Ananas comosus. It is thought to have originated in the Parana-Paraguay river basin of South America, and to have been spread by native tribes. It was certainly widely cultivated by the time that Europeans arrived in America near the end of the 15th century. The modern plant is a seedless mutation of the original variety. Many cultivars now exist, selected for their suitability as a fresh fruit or for canning of processed segments. The plants seen here are 'Cowboy', a sub-variety of the widespread 'Cayenne' cultivar. This photograph was taken in the Croydon plantation, Jamaica.
