Caption: Carob plant. 1790 engraving of a carob plant (Ceratonia siliqua) with flowers and ripe pods. The carob, sometimes called the locust tree, is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean area. A member of the legume family, its pods are rich in protein and are used as fodder. The beans are said to be the original carat weights used by goldsmiths.
