Caption: Cashew plant. 1753 engraving of a cashew plant (Anacardium occidentale) bearing ripe fruit. A native of South America, the cashew is now widely cultivated throughout the tropics. The plant is a hardy evergreen tree that is often grown on hillsides too dry and stony for other crops. The edible nuts are borne on swollen, pear-shaped receptacles called cashew apples, which are also edible. The sweet-tasting nuts are used in confectionary and desserts.
