Caption: Asian pear. View of an Asian pear (Pyrus sp. ), or pear apple, growing on a branch of its tree. Pears are members of the family Rosaceae. Pears are a good source of vitamin C, and contain some B- complex vitamins as well as phosphorous and potassium. They have juicy and sweet flesh, and are usually picked before they ripen, as they tend to ripen better in storage. The colder it is, the slower they ripen. There are many varieties of pear, from apple- shaped ones like the Asian pear to the teardrop-shaped common pear.
