Caption: Chernobyl. Fisheye lens view of the construction of the sarcophagus containing the remains of the reactor core at Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine (formerly in the USSR). In the foreground is a concrete mixing truck and construction workers. They are wearing cotton masks over their mouths to prevent inhalation of radioactive particles. The sarcophagus was built to prevent further release of contamination. Since its comp- letion there have been doubts about the sarcopha- gus' integrity. The accident occurred on 25th April 1986 at the No.4 RBMK-type reactor. Over a billion billion becquerels of radioactive nuclides were released. Photographed in November 1986.
