Caption: Fallout monitoring. Hand-held detector measuring levels of radioactive fallout from the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in the Ukraine (formerly in the USSR). The detector's readout shows a level of radiation far above normal. In the background is a statue of Lenin, founder of the Soviet state. Fallout from the Chernobyl disaster contaminated much of northern Europe. The disaster occurred on 25th April 1986 after an experiment on Reactor 4 went wrong. Over a billion billion becquerels of radioactive nuclides were released. Photographed in Ziyna in the Bryansk region, Russia, in April 1990.
