Caption: Cantaloupe melons. Two ripe cantaloupe melons (Cucumis melo), ready to be harvested. The melon plant is a trailing vine, and the fruits are always at ground level. Melons are a good source of vitamin C, and the essential mineral potassium. The tough webbed rind is considered inedible, but the soft pink flesh is juicy and sweet. Melons grow best in warm climates, and are thought to have originated in North Africa and the Middle East. They have been cultivated for over 3, 000 years in that area.
