Caption: Decontamination of buildings after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Ukraine. A worker in a protective suit sprays decontaminants on a building. In April 1986 one of the reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, Ukraine, exploded. It released large quantities of radioactive material into the environment, leading to the evacuation of 135,000 people from the surrounding area. 60,000 buildings were severely contaminated by the fallout and much of Northern Europe was affected.
