Caption: School radiation levels near Chernobyl. The radiation meter has the gamma symbol on it, signifying its use to detect gamma radiation, a high-energy form of radiation. The child at the front of the classroom is using an abacus. This school is in the village of Babchin, in the Gomel Province of Belarus. Gomel Province is near the border with Ukraine, and was heavily affected by fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power station following the nuclear disaster there on 26 April 1986. This school is within the restricted zone created around Chernobyl following the disaster. This photograph was taken on 21 April 2006, 20 years after the disaster.
