Caption: Radioactive handling. A scientist uses a robot arm to handle radioactive materials behind a glass screen. The materials will be used to contaminate soil with radionuclides in a research project to investigate how fallout from nuclear accidents affects farmland. By raising various crops in the soil the researchers hope to gain a better understanding of how the different radionuclides in fallout move through the food chain. The results could lead to ways of rehabilitating contaminated land. The project was initiated by the French Commission for Nuclear Power and is being carried out in Cadarache, France.
