Caption: Banana tree (Musa sp.). Clusters of green bananas ("hands") ripening on a banana tree. The purple flowers can also be seen. During reproduction the flower stem grows through the top of the leaves and bears bunches of flowers in small leaf-like structures called bracts. After the flowers are fertilised, the bract falls off and the flower cluster hangs over due to the weight of the developing fruit. The ripe fruit are an excellent source of carbohydrates and the mineral potassium. Photographed in the Santa Teresa Valley, Peru.
