Caption: Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), located at Marchwood on the banks of Southampton Water, UK. This ERF helps Hampshire to divert 85 per cent of its household waste away from landfill. It processes 165,000 tonnes of non-recyclable household waste and produces 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the National Grid. The facility is housed in a 32 metre high aluminium-cladded dome, with a chimney stack that is 65 metres high. The ERF uses the estuary water as part of the cooling process for the steam, which is used to power the turbines that generate the electricity. The facility was opened in July 2007.
