Caption: Manufacture of laser rods. A mixture of Yttrium- Aluminium Garnet (YAG) and trace amounts of neodymium is heated in an iridium crucible. Over the course of about 20 days, a single crystal grows in the centre of the crucible. This doped- YAG crystal (like the one seen here) may then be shaped and polished for use as a laser cavity rod.
