Caption: Edge-emitting high-power diode lasers are used in a variety of technological applications. Semiconductor (diode) lasers have a wide variety of applications including optical storage, telecommunications, and medical uses. Diode lasers have a dominant market share among all lasers produced. They account for 56% of laser market revenue (2006 data). Edge-emitting high-power diode lasers produce up to several watts of optical power. Pictured here are two single-stripe laser diodes mounted inside of TO-3 can packages. Laser radiation is emitted through a window on top of the can. This type of package is hermetic and typically incorporates a thermo-electric cooler (TEC).
