Caption: A Gaussian beam emitted by a Helium-Neon laser hitting a screen. This laser emits a fundamental mode which has a Gaussian intensity distribution across the beam. The characteristic laser speckle pattern is apparent. The speckle results from scattering of the monochromatic beam by a screen that is rough on a microscopic (wavelength) scale.
