Caption: Robot lawnmower. View of a solar powered robot lawnmower in action cutting grass. Known as a "solar tortoise" this micro-robot was developed at Solar and Robotics, Brussels. It employs nano- technology and micromechanics research. Oval in shape, weighing 5 kilograms, this silent and sophisticated lawnmower is powered by photovoltaic cells on its back. The servomotor is commanded by a fuzzy logic programme which permits the robot to steer itself, detect obstacles and edges of the lawn, adjusting to the density of the grass. The "solar tortoise" has a maximum speed of 50cm per second, mowing a lawn of 1000- 2000 square metres.
