Caption: Robot surveillance. Robot helicopter surveying the scene of a simulated hazardous materials spillage. The robot is negotiating the site without human control, avoiding obstacles such as flames and water, in order to locate dummies posed as casualties. The robot must also inform emergency services how the casualties may be reached safely. Photographed at the International Aerial Robotics competition at the Hazardous Materials Management and Emergency Response (HAMMER) facility, Washington, USA, in 1998. HAMMER is owned by the Department of Energy. This robot was built by a team from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, USA.
