Caption: Robot lobster. Robotic lobster submerged in a tank of water. In the background is researcher Joseph Ayers holding a real lobster (suborder Reptantia). His marine research laboratory is developing the robot at Northeastern University, USA. The robot has eight walking legs each of which has three joints. The movements of the legs are controlled by a computer which is programmed using mathematical models. These are obtained by investigating the movements of real lobsters. It is hoped that robots such as these will eventually find uses as mine sweepers. Photographed in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
