Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Nomad robot. Professor William L. "Red" Whittaker with the robot exploration vehicle Nomad. Nomad was remotely operated during a 210 kilometre journey across the Atacama Desert in Chile and tested in the Patriot Hills of Chilean Antarctica. During January 2000, Nomad was sent to Elephant Moraine in Antarctica where it autonomously located rocks, before distinguishing which were meteorites and analysing them. Nomad, which is funded by NASA, could be used for extraterrestrial exploration. Whittaker is from the Field Robotics Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
