Caption: Analogue robot insect Unibug 1.0 walking in sand dunes. This is a non-digital (analogue) robot built by the Canadian roboticist Mark Tilden. It is controlled by a device known as a nervous net, which works by generating a dynamic system of interactions between itself and the outside world. It has no pre-programming, but solves problems by reaching an equilibrium with its environment. It is hoped that robots like this could eventually be used to clear landmines. Tilden works at Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, USA. Photographed in the Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Colorado, USA.
