Caption: Spider robot. Prototype (G2) modular robot (PolyBot) walking in a field. PolyBots are made from a number of self-contained modules, each having its own on-board computer, infrared sensor, power supply, motor and connectors. Each module's computer allows it to function and move independently. When modules are connected together and a central control circuit added, the modules can move as a whole. In this case they move using their four "legs", in a similar way to a spider. Commercial uses could include search and rescue. PolyBots are being developed at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), USA.
