Caption: Robot Football. Robots play in the 1997 World Cup Robot Soccer (RoboCup '97) competition. The inter- national RoboCup promotes the development of intelligent robots that could be sent into hostile environments in the future. The competition will lead to advances in robot design and behaviour. These small-size category robots are less than 15 centimetres in diameter and play on a pitch the size of a table-tennis table. RoboCup matches have two 5-minute periods of play between 2 teams of up to five robots, with a 10 minute interval between them to allow the robots to recharge their batter- ies. RoboCup '97 was held in Nagoya, Japan. Robo- Cup '98 will be held in Paris, France, in July.
