Caption: ROVER robot used in decontamination operations at Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, following the accident to reactor unit 2 on March 28th 1979. The robot's arm is being tested before being intalled on another robot working in the highly contaminated basement of the reactor containment building, where it is used to direct a high- pressure water spray. The accident was caused by a loss of reactor cooling water that resulted in the exposure of fuel rods, some of which melted, burned through the reactor chamber lining and sank to the floor of the reactor building.
