Caption: Sewer inspection robot. Kurt, a sewer inspection robot, moving through a simulated sewer at the German National Research Centre (G.M.D.). This cable-less, autonomous robot has its own power supply and piloting system. It uses two low- powered lasers (red spots, centre left and right) to beam a grid (lower centre) onto the path in front of it. When the lines of the grid curve, indicating a bend or intersection in the pipe, the robot matches the curves against a digital map in its computer. It then pilots itself to its destination.
