Caption: Mobile phone mast. Antennas mounted on top of a mast. The panel-shaped antennas are known as sector antennas. These are used to communicate with mobile phones. A dish antenna (not seen) is used to communicate with other base stations, linking the mobile network together. The masts are typically 15 metres high with antennas that have a range of a few hundred metres in urban areas. Hundreds of masts and smaller antennas are required to provide uninterrupted coverage across a network.
