Caption: Mobile phone mast. Antennas mounted on top of a mast. The panel-shaped antennas are known as sector antennas. These are used to communicate with mobile phones. The dish antenna (right) is used to communicate with other base stations, linking the mobile network together. The masts are typically 15 metres high with antennas that have a range of a few hundred metres in urban areas. Hundreds of masts and smaller antennas are required to provide uninterrupted coverage across a network.
