Caption: Old and new methods of communication. At right is the former home of Samuel Morse (1791-1872), who invented the electric telegraph and the Morse code. He transmitted the first telegraph message on 24th May 1844. At upper left is the BT tower, a major UK communications hub and landmark. Opened originally in 1965 as a transmitter for high frequency radio and microwaves, it continues to be a functioning telecommunications centre today.
