Fibre optics. Several optical fibres. These fibres are usually made from glass and can be used for transmitting sound, and images. Each fibre consists of a core with an outer cladding that has a lower refractive index. Light travelling through the fibre is contained within the core because of total internal refraction at the core/cladding boundary. This allows data to be transmitted for very long distances with little or no absorption.
