Caption: A photodiode is a semiconductor diode whose junction is exposed to light. When a photon is absorbed in the junction region, electron-hole pair is created and photocurrent is produced. The value of photocurrent is proportional to the number of photons absorbed. Thus measuring photocurrent produced in a photodiode can be used to determine light intensity. Shown here is a photodiode manufactured by Hamamatsu (model G1117). The GaAsP diode has a spectral response similar to that of the human eye and extends from 280 nm to 760 nm. The outside diameter of the TO-8 package shown is 13.9 mm. Aug 2007.
