Rheostat varying current in a circuit. A Rheostat (lower right), also known as a variable resistor, has a resistance which can be altered. Ohm's law states that V=IR, where V is voltage, I is current and R is resistance. Voltage is kept fixed in the circuit. So when resistance is increased, current is decreased linearly.
