Caption: Italian one euro coin, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Euro coins and banknotes became legal tender across most of Europe on 1st January 2002. The coin shows a drawing made by the Italian scientist and artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452- 1519). Each country in the European Union (EU) has its own designs on one side of its coins. The currencies replaced by the Euro ceased to be legal tender on 30th June 2002. Magnification unknown.
