Caption: Light micrograph of the surface of a STL80 micro- processor, also known as an Integrated Injection Logic Design Validation Module. Microprocessors are the central processing units of a computer, packed into a single silicon chip. As the picture shows, they consist of a great variety of devices. Prominent are the square pads around the edges of the chip. Some are test pads; others will have connecting wires welded to them to provide the chip's links with the outside world. The STL80 is manufactured by STC. (Magnification unknown). Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 8.21, page 161.
